4 weeks into lockdown…and still not lost the plot.

What an interesting 4 weeks it has been. After the initial lockdown, which came as no surprise as one of my broadcast cameraman colleagues told me back in mid-February, that he had already been told that all live sport would be on hold from mid-March. Our theatre filming work was immediately postponed along with Conference and Seminar work. Cine and video transfer work, that is sent from photographic shops also came to a halt and a cinema and a TV ad I was working on also got shelved.

However, operating such a broad range of services has meant that the wheels have carried on turning. Surprisingly the lockdown has seemed to encourage people to “finally” sort out their camcorder “memories” and have them transferred to DVD  and or USB. Work has arrived with DHL and Royal Mail, along with a few jobs where people have detoured on their way back from shopping, to drop off a box of “goodies”.

For me what has sprung to the foreground is our use of Skype, House Party and Zoom. We have kept in touch with friends and relations on Skype, had two House Party sessions, one for each of my grandson’s birthdays, watched a wonderful performer, grounded from the cruise ships putting on a concert “live from his lounge” and on Thursday I “attended” a Zoom networking meeting. However the techno highlight was yesterday, (sad or what) when my wife spoke to her GP on a telephone consultation regarding a hand injury, that the hospital had told her should be back to normal within 4 weeks and he then logged her into a video consultation. After getting her to move her hands and fingers in all directions, as well as reviewing the Xrays, the verdict was that 4 weeks was optimistic and 6-8 weeks was more realistic. It just brings home though that we will all be embracing more of this technology in the months to come.

Worryingly, I have begun to really like Piers Morgan (apologies) and am now even  following him on Twitter.  What has impressed me, is his Jeremy Paxman interview style of taking no prisoners. His interviews this week with some of the pathetic, pitiful politicians, badly briefed and unable to answer a simple question, unable to admit that mistakes have been made along the way and taking bullshitting and waffling to new heights, have been brutal and so they should be. Meanwhile our dedicated NHS staff are risking their own lives with PPE shortages and are being rewarded with a badge. WTF?? Who in the name of all things stupid came up with that idea?

Of course we have all become mesmerised and inspired by Captain Tom Morgan – who at the time of typing has raised over £22,500,000 and surely 25million pounds is a possibility. I just hope that Just Giving and the Card providers do the right thing and RETURN their fees. Meanwhile, Michael Ball has mustered his team and released a tear jerking version of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, which includes captain Tom’s voice…red eyes…must be hay fever! https://www.facebook.com/bbcbreakfast/videos/860498044435162/

He could be #1 in the charts for his 100th Birthday – how good would that be?

I’ve been learning new things with some software products that I use, spent time working in the garden, cleaned the gutters and had two spotless cars with nowhere to go, until they were bombed by the anti-social pigeons, and enjoyed the delights of the Tesco in-store one way system. I’m down to double figures on the jobs my wife has given me and have spent way too much time on my second passion, cooking and eating.

Most importantly we have both stayed safe and hope that you do too.
